The $5000 gamble that saved FedEx

Frederick W. Smith, the founder of FedEx, once saved his company by taking the last $5000 the company had to its name and turning it into $32,000 after gambling in Las Vegas.

At this point, the company was on the verge of bankruptcy after losing more than $1 million a month, and there were no investors interested in contributing capital.

At this point, the $5,000 was not enough to cover the company’s expenses, and Smith decided to fly to Las Vegas and play BlackJack that weekend.

By luck, he managed to make $32,000, which was enough to cover the cost of fueling their planes and other operations for a few days.

It turned out that the few days was all they needed since shortly after, he managed to raise $11million, which was enough to keep the company afloat until it became profitable.

Today the company is worth around $25-$35 billion.
